Do unto others as you would have them do unto you! What?! Yep you heard me right! Leadership is just that.

As a leader – it is very important to understand that your actions speak AS loud as your words. People listen to what you say AND respond to your Leadership Style. Your leadership style is created by Developing Leadership Skills.

Think of what it would be like to work for you:

  • What is your Cultural message?
  • Are you considerate of your employees?
  • Do you manage them at the correct level?
  • Are you micro-managing them or the opposite – letting them do whatever they want and not holding them accountable? One extreme is just as bad as the other.

I was with a client the other day and they could not figure out why the revenue continued to decrease. I was brought in to review the team and get to the bottom of the issue. It was simple to find the answer. The managers were blaming the staff for not doing their job. The managers did not hold themselves accountable because their owner did not hold them accountable …and so slides the message downhill.

The buck stops at the top. Hold yourself accountable – help others achieve their goals and you will find success. Developing Leadership Skills starts with you standing up for all concerned and taking responsibility.  This is the sign of a true leader.

What are your Cultural Standards?

These are your shared beliefs on what is acceptable and what is not.

For example; A Cultural Standard would be that everyone in the company understands and believes in the Mission, Vision and Values of the company. Not just “believe” but they are integrated into their everyday standards.

This means a full integration of the mission and vision into their jobs and their job descriptions. This then become a measurable value and goals can be set around them as well as performance reviews.

Another example would be zero tolerance for gossip. Yes, people love to talk, but gossip is a poison that can quickly seep through a department or company. “Zero tolerance” typically means severe punishment, i.e.; they will lose their job. This type of standard – for employees to be held accountable would mean – a continual education program to help employees understand healthier ways to communicate to ensure equality for all.

– Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Leadership is a privilege given to those who are knowledgeable, and passionate about helping others get to the next level. Be the leader and build the passion into others as you and your people grow to the next level.
